Wikiveg: a community that decides whether products are vegan
As a freelance product designer, I designed the Android app for a vegan social network where anyone can register products, review them and reach a verdict together — an app that is still live and well rated today.
Role
Freelance product designer
Timeline
2–3 months · 2019
Client
Wikiveg (via freelance platform)
Scope
Interaction design, wireframing, prototyping, usability tests
01 — Brief
Is this product vegan? Let the community decide.
In 2019, working as a freelancer, I was hired to design the interface for Wikiveg from a written product memo. The app lets people register supermarket products they have doubts about, photograph the packaging and discuss the ingredients with the community until it reaches a verdict — vegan or not vegan — with a justification.
02 — Approach
Starting from Material Design — and knowing where to break it
The first release was Android-only, so I started from Material Design. Early wireframes showed its standard cards and counters couldn’t separate reviews by verdict or host a discussion space, so — through stakeholder reviews of the wireframes — I customised key components, applied the brand colour and added the missing patterns without over-engineering.
03 — Core flow
Search, register, discuss, decide

Search
People start by looking up the product they want to check.

Register
New products need a type, category, name and two photos of the packaging.

Discuss
When someone is unsure, a community thread opens around the product’s composition.

Analyse
Reviewers pick the additives present and rate the product vegan, plant-based or not vegan.

Additives registry
The first version — stakeholder conversations showed much more information was needed.

The very first login, later extended with Google sign-in and account creation.

04 — Result
Still live, still evolving
Wikiveg is still online and well rated. As the vegan community evolved, so did the product: a “100% plant-based” verdict was added, verdicts are now written out in full instead of icons, navigation moved to the bottom after usability tests, and user-uploaded photos get a green outline to set expectations about image quality.
The lesson I took with me: a design system is a starting point, not a constraint — the product’s real needs decide where to extend it.
